Taneytown is a city located in Carroll County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,128. Taneytown (http://www.ci.taneytown.md.us/) was founded in 1754.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.5 km² (2.9 mi²). 7.5 km² (2.9 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,128 people, 1,786 households, and 1,387 families residing in the city. The population density is 687.5/km² (1,781.1/mi²). There are 1,848 housing units at an average density of 247.7/km² (641.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.00% White, 1.74% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.62% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 1.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,786 households out of which 47.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.1% are married couples living together, 15.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.3% are non-families. 17.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.87 and the average family size is 3.22.
In the city the population is spread out with 34.1% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 35.4% from 25 to 44, 15.7% from 45 to 64, and 7.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.7 males.
