Talk:Secondary education

Should the article "High School" really redirect here? Middle school does not, yet both are considered secondary education.

"One of the main differences between primary and secondary education is that in secondary education, the teachers usually have to be certified by some higher authority (like a state) before they can teach."

Is this true in most of the world, or only in certain countries? -- Oliver P. 02:07 Feb 26, 2003 (UTC)

In the United States, both primary and secondary education teachers have to be certified by the state. DesertSteve 16:30 14 Jun 2003 (UTC)
In Germany, all instructors at any type of school, including kindergarten, have to be certified by the state. ly 06:08, 19 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Is gymnasium really used in Austria and Skandinavia? I know it is used in Germany, but I doubt the usage of the word in Austria. 82.82.117.83 19:44, 12 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I believe an Austrian friend told me once he went to a Gymnasium, and besides, a "site:at gymnasium" google search gives 35,100 hits, so... --Shallot 20:27, 12 Nov 2003 (UTC)

This article has to be expanded! It creates the false impression that Gymnasium is the only branch of secondary eduction in these European countries, which it isn't. In Germany you also find Hauptschule and Realschule. ly 06:08, 19 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Be bold! You seem to know more than the rest of us; do something! Anything! Even just 3 sentences! (I'm sure you know more than that.) --Menchi 06:10, 19 Nov 2003 (UTC)
I've tried. Thanks for the encouragement. ly 15:38, 19 Nov 2003 (UTC)
If you look more carefully, vocational schools are mentioned in the gymnasium section. I would have added more but it seems a sort of a generic topic, yet dependent on different countries, so I held back. If you're interested, please, go ahead and add stuff. --Shallot 14:32, 19 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Sorry, you are right, of course. And it really is a tricky subject, since you simply cannot cover all countries - not even all the German Länder. ly 15:38, 19 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Why not make an attempt at Education in Germany? It's still empty. Take a look at Education by country for other countries. -- Mic 17:43, Nov 19, 2003 (UTC)
Okay, you got me. ;-) ly 18:59, 22 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I changed the order of the Swedish and Finnish languages on the point of Finland. Giving the Finnish term first seems prudent, as 93 % of Finns speak Finnish and only 5 % Swedish. Naturally both terms need be given, Finland being a bilingual country.
