Talk:Realms of Arda
|
I took the liberty of copying this thread to this location. It originated in User talk:Itai and User talk:Darkelf. -Itai 18:50, 1 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Your Kingdoms of Arda is very interesting, but as you mention not all are actual Kingdoms. What do you think of Realms of Arda as a title? This would allow for the inclusion of places as The Shire (not a Kingdom) and Angband and Mordor. Jor 15:43, 1 Feb 2004 (UTC)
- "Realms" sounds good. Change accepted. On the other hand, I'm not quite so sure about Angband and Utumno. Both are fortresses, not, as it were, "realms". Generally speaking, while Mordor is certainly worthy of inclusion, I am less concerned about the realms of the enemy (not that I am not thankful for their inclusion). I aim for a list of all realms of Arda, including, when possible, dates of founding and undoing, culminating, ideally, in a graphic timeline.
- Somehow, this is more fun than getting ready for my calculus exam.

- Angband was a fortress, but also the capital of Morgoth. From it he ruled over the Easterlings of the First Age, and it was at least as large as a city. Other city-states (Gondolin) are listed. What do you think of Dor Daedeloth (Realm of Dread) instead? The term is used in the Sil to refer to Morgoth's realm.
- Some of the entries I have added/will add are clearly not belonging here, but it often helps to include them if you want a working timeline. For example Rhovanion was followed by a Balchoth-controlled enslaved realm, but the latter was never an actual 'nation'.
- Somehow, this is more fun than getting ready for my calculus exam. — I know the feeling ;) Instead of working on Kingdom of Rhovanion etc. I should be doing my job right now. Jor 19:04, 1 Feb 2004 (UTC)
- Sorry it took me long in replying, it's been a hectic week. Dor Daedeloth sounds marvelous, or it would have had I had the faintest idea how to pronounce it. Be it as it may, it reads marvelous, and that's all that matters. It appears to be that this article should be out of incubation (note to other, viz., unimportant people: this article began as User:Itai/Kingdoms of Arda, which is far more likely than having it begin as User:Itai/Man-earting Flowers) by now, so I copied it into the main wiki, a harsh world in which it'll be tormented by ferocious articles such as Velociraptor and Knitting. Let's hope it makes it through.

A less cluttered, though possibly somewhat less convenient, list was created by myself for my own inscrutable (provided one doesn't read the title bar) purposes. It has only now occurred to me that a link may be useful. Thus: User:Itai/Graphic Timeline of Middle-earth. -- Itai 13:27, 28 Mar 2004 (UTC)
