Hm. Given that uppercase P looks virtually identical to uppercase Rho, one wonders -- what is the true origin of the glyph? Hebrew ף looks very similiar to an mirrored P...

The Roman letter P used to look much like the Hebrew ף and R looked like Rho (P). As P took its present form a stroke was added to 'rho' to distinguish it from P. You can see the older forms at Latin alphabet.
