Talk:List of Columbia University people

What's up, Dunc? Believe it or not, I actually considered the current title, more or less--"List of people associated with Columbia University"--before reeling in horror at its unwieldiness and naming it the more succinct, and IMHO much clearer, "People of Columbia University". (I had the long-standing article Harvard University people in mind by way of analogy.) Would you object if I renamed it back, or at least changed "persons" in the title to "people"? Thanks. I think my title reads better. The correct plural of person is persons, not people, and people of Columbia University; the use of people here may suggest race or atleast a genetically related group people, and the use of persons respects them as individuals rather than the collective whole. I disagree--"people" is an acceptable plural of "person," and the distinction between "people" and "persons" is now archaic for our usage here. I see what you're getting at with the connotations of society and racial identification, but I would submit that one wouldn't automatically think along those lines if presented with a title like "People of New York" or "People of TIME Magazine", though perhaps one might for "People of Malaysia"--I mean it's contextual, and there's no real worry that anyone's going to take "People of Columbia University" that way. In any case, these concerns must be weighed against the terrible ugliness of "List of people associated with..." and, to me, that pushes "People of" to the front. I suppose we could compromise on "Persons of Columbia University" if you'd like. Wikisux 14:47, 23 Jun 2004 (UTC)

While I agree with moving Eisenhower, he wasn't really a member of the faculty per se, as he was President of the University, a more corporate position than academic. (And while current Pres. Bollinger does also teach a course in constitutional law, I don't recall Eisenhower doing the same). Might want to find some way to clarify this... Best Slw2014

  • By all extents, within university culture, Eisenhower is seen much more as a separate figure from the faculty than other longer standing/current presidents of the university, such as Butler, Low, and Bollinger. --[[User:Ctrl build|Ctrl_buildtalk Missing image

From Wikipedia:Cleanup/Leftovers

lists of names need to be alphabetized, some NPOVing needs to be done, titles should be italicized, names which have no explanations need explanations, links to other Wikipedia articles need to be included.

Redesigning these endless lists

Hey guys, I've been playing around with this page trying to make it look better, using the magic of Wikipedia's templates, and here's what I've come up with so far: List of Columbia University people/test

Right now it renders properly in Mozilla/Firefox and Safari (and probably Opera), but if you think it's an improvement it shouldn't be hard to get it working in IE as well. What do you think? Typogfk 02:44, 16 May 2005 (UTC)
