Talk:Great Liberal Backlash of 2003

See Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Great Liberal Backlash of 2003 for a July/August 2004 deletion debate over this page.

This title is bizarre. Is a quote from a conservative commentator worth an article? I'm not sure this is NPOV, but I'm on the other side of the Atlantic. 81.187.43.179 23:27, 9 Nov 2003 (UTC)

I don't feel I should comment on the necessity or NPOV-ness of the article, but I thought I should mention that Ivins is a liberal commentator.  :) - Hephaestos 23:35, 9 Nov 2003 (UTC)

"[S]hlepping around the country" is a POV-tilting way of putting it, necessity of the article aside. --Charles A. L. 14:55, Nov 18, 2003 (UTC)

Except that it's a quote from Ivins, so never mind. --Charles A. L. 14:56, Nov 18, 2003 (UTC)

Lir, you shouldn't be offended or feel it is "rude" to change your edits. It's not personal. The reason is that this page has developed "mission creep" and it is no longer about Molly Ivins' small comment in one editorial. It has turned into a dumping ground of all things liberal and anti-Republican. Check my edits, I am no friend of the neocons or conservatives, but we have to keep this NPOV and on-topic. That's why it was changed so. Please discuss if you have issues with this view. Fuzheado | Talk 03:11, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Also, who is this "Evans" that pops up unintroduced with a quote? If nothing else, that quote does not fit. Fuzheado | Talk 03:12, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)

You can talk about mission creep all day; but, the quote I aded was from the same editorial in which she referred to the "Great Liberal Backlash" -- my addition is relevant. Lirath Q. Pynnor

Now I get it, your "Evans" is actually Ivins. Why take it out on me when you were the one with the gross spelling error? And if you look at the edit history, you will see I was one of the earliest authors of this page, so your accusation that I am not familiar with the quote is way off. Instead, it indicates you are the one unfamiliar with the author's name and Wikipdia's page history button.
However, I do agree that a quote is appropriate. But all the ellipsis (...) make the quote look fishy, as if it's only selectively quoting Ivins. Can you make the quote shorter or more complete and eliminate the ellipses? Right now it looks like we are quoting her out of context to further an agenda. So to "play nice" by your standards, I'll give you time to fix that, and if you don't, then I'll fix it. I'm quite bemused by your sensitivty about people touching your words, as if you were the sole owner of or have some type of entitlement to the text here. Not what I would expect from a Wikpedia veteran. Fuzheado | Talk 01:44, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)

This phrase

...gets 39 google hits when you exclude Wikipedia content (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=%22Great+Liberal+Backlash+of+2003%22+-encyclopedia+-reference+-wikipedia). I think it should go on vfd, and have moved accordingly. [[User:Meelar|Meelar (talk)]] 20:11, 2004 Jul 28 (UTC)

Meelar, I can see your point, but it's a phrase used by Ivins in an important editorial just before the spate of books and videos that came out in the US. I've voted to keep, but I agree that this article has issues, in that it has become a liberal laundry list, which is not appropriate. But that can be fixed by editing. Fuzheado | Talk 01:44, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Reverting without discussing is not useful. Molly Ivins' quote is that she is part of a "half dozen or so" writers. So why do we have an superfluous list of nine more? And then another roll call of liberal sites/personalities? Fuzheado | Talk 19:38, 31 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Does this even belong in Wikipedia?

I am not sure this is something worthy of encyclopedic mention. Were these books part of a coordinated plan to rebut the Bush administration or did all these opposition books come out as a matter of happenstance? If it was just coincidence, this entire entry does not belong.

Also, could we stop calling Bill O'reilly a conservative. He does not identify as one and often takes liberal stands. I would find it hard to believe that an actual liberal or conservative would deny their political leanings. He says he is not conservative, who are we to disagree?Ramsquire 18:57, 23 Nov 2004 (UTC)
