Which are the original and modern Greek pronunciations of "beta"? I think this information could be useful ;) Sabbut 15:13, 9 May 2004 (UTC)
The modern Greek pronunciation is (IPA or SAMPA)/vi.ta/,<vee.ta>.And Koine pronunciation is ... maybe /be:ta/.
Pronunciation of Beta (True or false??)
True or false: the modern Greek alphabet has a separate letter for the b sound with beta being for the v sound. 66.245.107.72 19:54, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
- A little of both. Beta (or rather vita) is indeed for [v], but there is no single letter for [b] in Modern Greek. When a [b] is represented in Modern Greek, it's done with the digraph μπ. Pi (letter) - one of very few Greek letters with any information on pronunciation at all - does a good job describing this, but there's no information about that in Mu (letter). Also, both δ and γ have become fricatives in Modern Greek, and the digraphs ντ and γκ are used for the voiced stops [d] and [g] respectively. (edit: Though I was initially unsure of my facts, I have verified that γκ is indeed the digraph used for [g]. See Omniglot's page on the Greek alphabet (http://www.omniglot.com/writing/greek.htm).) 129.2.211.72 21:27, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
