Syama sastri, who is said to be one of the trimurthi in carnatic music, was born at Thiruvarur on Apr 26, 1762. He was named Venkatakrishna by his parents. Though he did not hail from a family with musical background, he was initiated by Sangeetha Swami.
His family was totally devoted to Goddess Kamatchi of Kanchipuram and hence most of his compositions were in praise of Her. He composed over 300 krithis, out of which only 60-70 are available today. His compositions were predominantly in Telugu and some in Tamil and Sanskrit. He composed the Navaratnamalika in praise of Goddess Meenakshi of Madurai.Template:India-bio-stub
