The suburb of Sutherland is the seat of Sutherland Shire, Australia. It is adjacent to Kirrawee and Woronora. It has a rather small commercial region and a major residential area, however is host to many urban facilities such as a general purpose entertainment center where citizenship ceremonies take place for individuals living in the Shire, local government council offices, and a major central library. CityRail services Sutherland station and a branch line to Cronulla.
Sutherland was named after one of Captain Cook's seamen (Forby Sutherland) who died on 2 May 1770 and who was buried on the southern shore of Botany Bay.
