Survivor Type (Stephen King)
|
Survivor Type is a short story by Stephen King, published in the Skeleton Crew collection.
Survivor Type is written in the form of the diary of a surgeon who had been attempting to smuggle a large amount of heroin on a cruise he had been on. When the ship sinks, he finds himself marooned on a tiny island in the Pacific with very limited supplies and no food. He is a survivor type, and as he slowly slips into insanity from starvation and exposure, he resorts to amputating pieces of himself and consuming the severed limbs, using the drug for anesthesia during operations on himself. Eventually, he has cut off and eaten everything below his waist, as well as his ears and is in the midst of devouring his left hand when the story ends.
