Sunbury is a city located in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,610. It is the county seat of Northumberland CountyTemplate:GR. The local newspaper is The Daily Item and the local All News/Sports radio station is WKOK 1070 kHz.
Geography
Sunbury is located at 40°51'50" North, 76°47'21" West (40.863894, -76.789174)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.6 km² (2.2 mi²). 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.40% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 10,610 people, 4,540 households, and 2,637 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,932.3/km² (4,997.1/mi²). There are 5,072 housing units at an average density of 923.7/km² (2,388.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.26% White, 1.29% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.91% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 3.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,540 households out of which 28.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% are married couples living together, 14.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.9% are non-families. 36.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.91.
In the city the population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 29.5% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 17.4% who are 65 years of age or older.
