Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC, Mitsui Sumitomo Ginko) is a Japanese bank based in Tokyo, Japan. It is a member of the Sumitomo Group and Mitsui Group.
History
In April of 2001, Sakura Bank and Sumitomo Bank merged, forming Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation.
In December 2002, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) establishes Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc. as holding company.
It failed to take over UFJ Bank losing out to Tokyo Mitsubishi Bank
