History
Once ruled by a Sultan, a 1703 treaty between him and the Sultan of Brunei granted the modern Malaysian region of Sabah to the Sultan of Sulu. Leased to an Austro-Hungarian company in the 1800s who later gave it to a British company (which then became the semi-independent state of North Borneo for some years), the Philippines argue they never formally gave the territory away. During the Indonesia-Malaysia confrontation the Philippines cut off diplomatic contact with Malaysia over the issue, but since then have accepted the status quo.
