Stony Point (town), New York

Stony Point is a town located in Rockland County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 14,244.

The Town of Stony Point is in the northeast part of the county.

History

The Town of Stony Point was founded in 1865. The Stony Point State Historic Site, north of the community of Stony Point, marks a minor battle in the War of the American Revolution.

Geography

The western town line is the border of Orange County, New York, and the eastern town line is defined by the Hudson River with Westchester County, New York on the opposite shore.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 81.7 km² (31.5 mi²). 72.1 km² (27.8 mi²) of it is land and 9.6 km² (3.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 11.76% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,244 people, 4,832 households, and 3,802 families residing in the town. The population density is 197.5/km² (511.7/mi²). There are 4,951 housing units at an average density of 68.7/km² (177.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.33% White, 1.27% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 1.29% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.66% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. 6.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,832 households out of which 38.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.2% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.3% are non-families. 17.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.92 and the average family size is 3.33.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $71,940, and the median income for a family is $83,238. Males have a median income of $55,727 versus $36,424 for females. The per capita income for the town is $28,244. 3.7% of the population and 1.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.4% of those under the age of 18 and 10.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
