Stockton is a city located in Rooks County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,558. It is the county seat of Rooks CountyTemplate:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²). 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,558 people, 636 households, and 403 families residing in the city. The population density is 462.7/km² (1,198.2/mi²). There are 745 housing units at an average density of 221.3/km² (573.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.97% White, 2.82% African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.16% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. 1.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 636 households out of which 28.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% are married couples living together, 9.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% are non-families. 35.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 23.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.85.
In the city the population is spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 25.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 102.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $31,125, and the median income for a family is $38,603. Males have a median income of $26,458 versus $19,688 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,205. 9.1% of the population and 6.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.4% of those under the age of 18 and 8.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
History
Stockton is a city located in Rooks County, Kansas. Stockton was founded in 1872. It is the County Seat of Rooks County. Several of the earliest settlers were cattle dealers and they named their new home Stocktoown, or as it soon became Stockton. Stockton is located on the natural trail up the valley of the South Solomon River and where the military supply trail from Fort Kearney, Nebraska, to Fort Hays, Kansas, crossed the South Solomon River. Stockton survived & grew during the thirteen years from founding until the arrival of the railroad in 1885. Stockton,Kansas was the home George W. Beebe ,who also erected the first house and opened the first stock of goods.He came on to the town site in June,8172.Other settlers were S.C. Smith,who built the first frame house ,bringing his lumber by team from a distance od 150 miles; Joseph McNulty,Marvin and Lynn Randall- the Randalls built in 1872 , the large stone business house on Main street.
