Starship Yorktown
|
The USS Yorktown (NCC-1704) is a Constitution class starship in the Star Trek fictional universe.
This vessel was seen briefly during Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home when it was disabled by the Probe on its voyage to Earth.
Fans of Star Trek have long contended that this ship was renamed at the end of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and became the second Starship Enterprise (NCC-1701-A). Other sources say that a new vessel being constructed at the time of Voyage Home - possibly a new Yorktown - was renamed as the Enterprise-A. A third theory holds that the reason the first NCC-1701 was ordered decommissioned (in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock) was because this new Enterprise was in preparation. However, these theories can only be considered fanon and not canon as the origin of the new Enterprise was never revealed on screen.
Gene Roddenberry originally intended the Enterprise in The Original Series to be named Yorktown but the name was changed prior to filming of the first pilot episode "The Cage".
It is assumed that this ship is named after the famous Battle of Yorktown that took place in the American Revolutionary War. The starship may also be named after the numerous naval vessels named Yorktown, particularly the Yorktown (CV-5), an aircraft carrier sunk during the Battle of Midway in 1942.
