Speculator, New York

Speculator is a village located in Hamilton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 348. The village, formerly called Newtons Corners, was renamed after Speculator Mountain. The postal zip code is 12164.

The Village of Speculator is the only incorporated village within Hamilton County. It is within the Town of Lake Pleasant. The village lies on the north end of a lake, also called Lake Pleasant. The local inhabitants sometimes refer to the village as the "Four Corners," referring to the intersection of Routes 8 and 30 in the middle of the business district.

Speculator is within the Adirondack State Park.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 122.3 km² (47.2 mi²). 115.6 km² (44.7 mi²) of it is land and 6.7 km² (2.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.46% water.

Speculator Mountain with an altitude of 2977 feet (907 meters) is south of the village.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 348 people, 163 households, and 94 families residing in the village. The population density is 3.0/km² (7.8/mi²). There are 484 housing units at an average density of 4.2/km² (10.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 96.26% White, 1.72% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.15% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 1.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 163 households out of which 17.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% are married couples living together, 4.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.3% are non-families. 39.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.00 and the average family size is 2.61.

In the village the population is spread out with 14.7% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 26.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 112.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 110.6 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $33,393, and the median income for a family is $43,750. Males have a median income of $33,750 versus $20,417 for females. The per capita income for the village is $25,089. 4.3% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.7% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Speculator is famous as the former location of the training camps of boxers Gene Tunney, Max Schmeling, and Max Baer.

A public beach is located in the village on the north lake shore.
