Southington, Connecticut

Southington is a town located in Hartford County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 39,728.

Southington was settled in 1698 as Panthorn. It was originally part of Farmington. In 1779, it was incorporated as the Town of Southington. Plantsville, Marion and Milldale are the sections of Southington that have their own post offices, in addition to Southington's main post office.

Southington originally developed as a manufacturing center. Some of the products invented there include cement that was able to harden under water, the carriage bolt machine and a new tinware process. Despite the overall decline of industry in New England, 28% of the workers in Southington are still employed in manufacturing, most of them in the production of fabricated metal and aircraft. The town is located on Interstate 84 and has five exits along it.

The town is also known for its high school sports teams, the Southington Blue Knights.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.8 km² (36.6 mi²). 93.2 km² (36.0 mi²) of it is land and 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.72% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 39,728 people, 15,083 households, and 11,282 families residing in the town. The population density is 426.2/km² (1,103.8/mi²). There are 15,557 housing units at an average density of 166.9/km² (432.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.45% White, 0.86% African American, 0.09% Native American, 1.04% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 2.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 15,083 households out of which 33.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.9% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% are non-families. 20.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $60,538, and the median income for a family is $70,339. Males have a median income of $48,828 versus $35,298 for females. The per capita income for the town is $26,370. 3.3% of the population and 2.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.0% of those under the age of 18 and 5.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
