Their main rival is Colchester United, who also play in League One.
Southend United reached their first national cup final in 2004, competing in the LDV Vans Trophy Final, however the team lost 2-0 to Blackpool at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales. A 1-0 aggregate win in the semifinals over Northampton Town sent them back to Millennium Stadium for the playoff final against Lincoln City. Southend won 2-0 after extra time, giving them the final League Two promotion spot.
