South Tynedale Railway
|
South Tynedale Ralway is a heritage railway in Cumbria and England's highest narrow gauge railway. The route runs from Alston to Kirkhaugh, Northumberland, via the South Tyne Viaduct, the Gilderdale Viaduct and the Whitley Viaduct.
The present line is narrow gauge but is built on the trackbed of a standard gauge line to Haltwhistle where it meets the Newcastle to Carlisle Tyne Valley Line. The standard gauge closed in 1976 and the trackbed still appears to be mostly intact - presumably the eventual aim is for the Narrow Gauge to reach Haltwhistle too.
