The Interstate 710 Controversy

South Pasadena is well-known throughout the greater Los Angeles region for its vehement opposition to the completion of Interstate 710 from Interstate 10 to Interstate 210.

The litigation over the 710 "gap closure" has raged on for three decades. At present, Caltrans is currently exploring the possibility of building a tunnel underneath South Pasadena, but it is not yet clear whether such a project will be physically or financially feasible.

Because I-710 was never finished, and because there are no four-lane arterials that run straight from Pasadena to East Los Angeles, the entire western end of the San Gabriel Valley suffers from severe traffic congestion.

The reason why residents refuse to extend the I-710 is because many old and valuable houses will be torn down. More apartment buildings will be obstructed and this will surely lower S.P.U.S.D.(South Pasadena Unified School District) very high rankings. Long time residents have vowed "over their dead bodies."
