The South Park neighborhood of Houston, Texas is a broad postwar development in the southern-central area of the city, just south of MacGregor Park (from which it gets its name) and the 610 Loop. The neighborhood has a population of 22,282, just over 1% of the total population of Houston according to the 2000 Census. 81% of the South Park population is African American compared to an overall 25% African American population in Houston. Houston's Martin Luther King Boulevard (formerly called South Park Boulevard) runs through the area.
Rapper and convict South Park Mexican is from this neighborhood. The area is also infamous in the region as the origin of codeine cough syrup abuse, which spread across Houston and the Gulf Coast in the 1990s. However, most South Park residents maintain a strong sense of neighborhood pride; the neighborhood is not at all as crime-ridden or "ghetto"as media images portray it.
