South Browning, Montana

South Browning is a census-designated place located in Glacier County, Montana. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,677. South Browning is a rural village on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. It is located close to the nearby town of Browning.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.2 km² (2.4 mi²). 6.0 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.09% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,677 people, 475 households, and 391 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 277.9/km² (719.4/mi²). There are 526 housing units at an average density of 87.2/km² (225.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 2.44% White, 0.12% African American, 94.39% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 2.50% from two or more races. 2.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 475 households out of which 53.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% are married couples living together, 32.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.5% are non-families. 15.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.52 and the average family size is 3.90.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 43.2% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 14.6% from 45 to 64, and 4.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years. For every 100 females there are 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $12,130, and the median income for a family is $16,167. Males have a median income of $20,278 versus $18,068 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $5,666. 49.2% of the population and 51.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 52.8% of those under the age of 18 and 43.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
