History
The Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education was established in 1973 to address the growing need of the United States--especially in inner city areas--for primary care physicians. It began as a small school for talented high school graduates of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. In late 1984 it became the City University Medical School, and expanded its facilities and faculty.
Its stated mission is to increase the number of superior primary care physicians--especially minority physicians--to provide adequate preventive and therapeutic treatment to needy communities.
It is named after Sophie Kesten, who was Leonard Davis's wife, because Leonard, a graduate of CCNY, was a major benefactor of the school.

The Sophie Davis School is located on the campus of the City College of New York (CCNY). In 2003 it moved into its permanent home in Townsend Harris Hall, which had been renovated as part of CCNY's Terra Cotta Restoration Project, and to build modern teaching capabilities into its classrooms, seminar rooms, and teaching laboratories. Construction continues (as of April 2004) on a long-distance conference room.
