Sodus Point, New York

Sodus Point is a village located in Wayne County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,160. The name is derived from a nearby body of water, Sodus Bay.

The Village of Sodus Point is in the northern part of the Town of Sodus. This is a lakeside community surrounded on three sides by water. Sodus Point Park Beach is west of the village.

History

The village is the site of the first settlement in the town in 1794. The village was burned in 1812 during the War of 1812 by a British raiding party, leaving all but one building demolished.

Geography

The village is on the shore of Lake Ontario on a point of land on the northwest edge of Sodus Bay, an arm of Lake Ontario. The name "Sodus" reportedly is derived from a native word meaning "gleam on the water."

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²). 3.9 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.67% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,160 people, 491 households, and 327 families residing in the village. The population density is 300.6/km² (778.5/mi²). There are 886 housing units at an average density of 229.6/km² (594.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 95.95% White, 1.55% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 2.16% from two or more races. 1.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 491 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% are non-families. 27.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.83.

In the village the population is spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 30.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 108.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.4 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $39,914, and the median income for a family is $44,600. Males have a median income of $38,667 versus $25,521 for females. The per capita income for the village is $22,642. 13.8% of the population and 8.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.5% of those under the age of 18 and 10.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
