Salak (Salacca edulis, also Salacca zalacca, Calamus zalacca) is a type of palm tree (family Arecaceae) with edible fruit. The palm grows natively in Indonesia and Malaysia.
The fruit grow in clusters at the base of the palm, and is also known as snakefruit due to its reddish-brown scaly skin. Fruits are usually round with a distinct tip; to peel, pinch the tip of the fruit and pull away. The fruit inside consists of lobes, each lobe containing a large inedible seed. The taste is usually sweet and acidic, but the texture can vary from very dry and crumbly to moist and crunchy.
