Sky Valley, Georgia

Sky Valley is a city located in Rabun County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 221.

It is home to Sky Valley Resort, which offers golfing in the summer, and in the winter is the only ski area in Georgia. The only highway or other through-road is the Dillard/Highlands Road (Ga. Highway 246 and N.C. Highway 106) between Dillard, Georgia and Highlands, North Carolina . The northern city limit is the North Carolina state line, acorss which the highway zigzags, crossing in five different places (two of which are into and out of the city).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.8 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 221 people, 112 households, and 81 families residing in the city. The population density is 28.2/km² (72.9/mi²). There are 675 housing units at an average density of 86.0/km² (222.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.48% White, 4.07% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 112 households out of which 11.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.9% are married couples living together, 4.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.8% are non-families. 25.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.97 and the average family size is 2.30.

In the city the population is spread out with 9.5% under the age of 18, 2.3% from 18 to 24, 8.1% from 25 to 44, 34.4% from 45 to 64, and 45.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 64 years. For every 100 females there are 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $44,750, and the median income for a family is $57,500. Males have a median income of $41,875 versus $13,750 for females. The per capita income for the city is $31,511. 4.8% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.3% of those under the age of 18 and 1.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
