The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is a non-profit organization whose members consider themselves nuns for the queer community. They are involved in activism, raise money for AIDS projects and other community service organizations, and espouse safer sex and personal responsibility.
The organization was started in 1979 in San Francisco, California, and has grown to include sister houses in locations such as Seattle, Washington (1987), Los Angeles, California (1995), as well as England, France, Germany, Scotland, Australia, and Uruguay with between two to four hundred nuns worldwide.
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence have raised over $1,000,000 and distributed it to non-profit organizations that serve the queer and sex positive community as well as organizations such as the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund and Wendy's Hope, a women's breast cancer charity. Originally, the organization included only gay male nuns, but it now includes men and women who identify as gay, straight, bisexual, and transgendered.
Sister Boom-Boom ran for San Francisco City Council and got over 23,000 votes on the "Nun of the Above" ticket.
According to legend, The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were placed on the Papal List of Heretics by the Pope upon his visit to San Francisco as a result of their public exorcism of the Catholic Church's dogma, hypocrisy, guilt and shame.
Today, The Sisters continue to uphold their vows to promulgate universal joy and expiate stigmatic guilt through habitual manifestation.
