About 160 km north of Pontianak is the municipality of Singkawang, population estimated to be about 150,000 residents, of which 70% are Chinese descent. Beside the national language of Bahasa Indonesia, the Chinese dialect of Hakka is commonly use by the general population, including the non-chinese ethnic groups. It is surrounded by the sea on one side and the mountains of Pasi, Poteng and Sakok on the other side
