The Single

Sin is the fourth official Nine Inch Nails release and is a single for the album Pretty Hate Machine. It contains three remixes of "Sin" from Pretty Hate Machine and Nine Inch Nails' first cover song. Even though the front has a stylized graphic that simply says "Sin" and everyone calls it "Sin" (including the official NIN webite (http://www.nin.com/halo/index.html)), the spine of the US version refers to the album as "Sin Long, Dub & Short".

"Get Down Make Love" is a cover of the Queen song originally released on News of the World.

The Song

This line from "Sin":

stale incense old sweat / and lies lies lies

is from the Clive Barker story "In the Hills, the Cities," found in The Books of Blood. Trent Reznor is a fan of Barker's and he liked this line so much, he included it in a song. Clive Barker is thanked in the liner notes for Pretty Hate Machine.

A music video was made for this song. It was directed by Brett Turnbull around October, 1990, but wasn't released until November 24, 1997 when it appeared on Halo 12. Likely, the controversial sexuality of the video prevented its release. In addition to S&M themes and a topless woman, the video features two teenage boys playing with a dildo.

"Sin" has been covered by Akanoid, Eric Gorfain, Razed in Black and Tin Electric.
