Simsbury, Connecticut

Simsbury is a town located in Hartford County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 23,234. The town was incorporated as Connecticut's twenty-first town in May 1670.

There are four census-designated places in Simsbury: Simsbury Center, Tariffville, Weatogue, and West Simsbury.

The first steel mill in the history of the United States opened in Simsbury in 1728.

The Ethel Walker School (http://www.ethelwalker.org/) is an all girls private school located in town.

The International Skating Center of Connecticut (http://www.isccskate.com/) is located in Simsbury.

Three of the four state parks in Hartford County (Penwood State Park (http://dep.state.ct.us/stateparks/parks/penwood.htm), Stratton Brook State Park (http://dep.state.ct.us/stateparks/parks/stratton.htm), and Talcott Mountian State Park (http://dep.state.ct.us/stateparks/parks/talcott.htm)) are located in Simsbury.

Simsbury's sister city is Wittmund, Germany.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 88.9 km² (34.3 mi²). 87.7 km² (33.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.25% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 23,234 people, 8,527 households, and 6,591 families residing in the town. The population density is 264.8/km² (685.7/mi²). There are 8,739 housing units at an average density of 99.6/km² (257.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.30% White, 1.17% African American, 0.09% Native American, 2.12% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 1.54% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,527 households out of which 41.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.1% are married couples living together, 6.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.7% are non-families. 19.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the town the population is spread out with 29.5% under the age of 18, 3.6% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $82,996, and the median income for a family is $97,008. Males have a median income of $70,519 versus $42,136 for females. The per capita income for the town is $39,710. 2.2% of the population and 1.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.6% of those under the age of 18 and 4.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
