"Hanging of the Sigismund Bell in 1521" by Jan Matejko
The Sigismund Bell (in Polish, Dzwon Zygmunta), was created in 1520 by Johan Behem. It hangs in the bell tower of the Wawel Cathedral in Kraków, Poland. It was created using metals melted from the armour of soldiers defeated by Polish forces.
The bell is only rung on extremely important occasions, such as the election of new Popes and the outbreak of war and peace.
