Shooting at the 1896 Summer Olympics

At the 1896 Summer Olympics, five shooting events were contested. These events took place at the newly constructed shooting range at Kallithea. They were organized and prepared by the Sub-Committee for Shooting.

The first shooting event was the 200 metre rifle match. It was begun on 8 April, but because there were 160 competitors (150 of which were Greek) the competition continued on to the next day.

When the competition finished in the morning of 9 April, Pantelis Karasevdas of Greece had hit the target all 40 times, amassing a score of 2320 points. Pavlos Pavlidis hit the target 38 times and came in second.

Alexandros Theofilakis (GRE)

The second rifle event, the last of the shooting events, was begun on 11 April. Each marksmen fired 40 shots. 25 men entered the event. Phrangoudis led after the first day, but when the event was continued on 12 April, Orphanidis took the lead and held on to win first place. He hit the target 37 times.

16 competitors entered the regulated pistol match. Each shot thirty rounds. The winner, John Paine of the United States, hit the target 25 times. His brother, Sumner Paine, hit the target 23 times. Their American-made military revolvers were far superior to the arms used by the other contestants.

With the Paine brothers disqualified due to their armament not being of the required specification for the event, only four shooters entered the fourth shooting event. It was held on 11 April, and resulted in the top two places going to the Greek marksmen. Nielsen took third place and Merlin took fourth.

Six competitors entered the 30 metre pistol event on 11 April. John Paine elected not to compete, leaving Sumner to win the event alone.
