Shippensburg Township is a township located in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 4,504.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 6.5 km² (2.5 mi²). 6.5 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,504 people, 860 households, and 388 families residing in the township. The population density is 690.1/km² (1,786.2/mi²). There are 938 housing units at an average density of 143.7/km² (372.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 93.65% White, 3.73% African American, 0.04% Native American, 1.13% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 1.13% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 860 households out of which 20.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.4% are married couples living together, 6.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 54.8% are non-families. 25.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.79.
In the township the population is spread out with 7.5% under the age of 18, 68.5% from 18 to 24, 11.0% from 25 to 44, 6.2% from 45 to 64, and 6.8% who are 65 years of age or older.
