Shelby is a city located in Bolivar County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,926.

Geography

Shelby is located at 33°56'57" North, 90°45'55" West (33.949293, -90.765241)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²). 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.37% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,926 people, 919 households, and 677 families residing in the city. The population density is 416.9/km² (1,079.5/mi²). There are 963 housing units at an average density of 137.2/km² (355.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 7.93% White, 91.08% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 0.44% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 919 households out of which 43.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 26.3% are married couples living together, 41.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% are non-families. 23.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.07 and the average family size is 3.60.

In the city the population is spread out with 37.5% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 15.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 27 years. For every 100 females there are 82.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 70.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $17,798, and the median income for a family is $20,368. Males have a median income of $26,250 versus $19,554 for females. The per capita income for the city is $10,567. 44.5% of the population and 39.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 56.5% of those under the age of 18 and 21.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
