Setauket-East Setauket is a census-designated place located in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 15,931.
Geography
Setauket-East Setauket is located at 40°55'48" North, 73°6'7" West (40.930007, -73.102081)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 24.0 km² (9.3 mi²). 21.9 km² (8.5 mi²) of it is land and 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.64% water.
The town of Setauket is located on the North Shore of Long Island in central Suffolk County. One of Brookhaven town's "Three Villages" Setauket varies considerably as one travels north to south. In Setauket's Old Field there are wealthy waterfront estates, many from earlier decades. There is a New England style village green with a mill pond and park, a quaint post office, and two churches from the 1700's. The Emma Clark Library, also on the Village Green is often considered the best on Long Island.
South of 25a Setauket becomes more varied with quaint colonial style houses mixing with industrial areas and Levitt-built houses near NY Route 347. The Three Village School district, which all Setauket children attend is considered to be a good performer, but is facing serious strains from enrollment growth and aging facilties.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 15,931 people, 5,521 households, and 4,289 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 727.1/km² (1,882.3/mi²). There are 5,632 housing units at an average density of 257.0/km² (665.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 87.76% White, 1.27% African American, 0.17% Native American, 8.80% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.61% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 3.43% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,521 households out of which 39.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.6% are married couples living together, 6.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.3% are non-families. 17.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.88 and the average family size is 3.26.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 96.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.5 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP is $86,986, and the median income for a family is $102,472. Males have a median income of $70,276 versus $41,281 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $37,736. 4.0% of the population and 2.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.2% of those under the age of 18 and 0.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
