Seabrook, Texas

Seabrook is the most south-eastern city of Harris County, Texas. Seabrook's closet neighbors include La Porte to the north; Pasadena to the north west; Clear Lake City, El Lago and Taylor Lake Village to the west; and League City, Clear Lake Shores and Kemah to the south. Seabrook is bound by Galveston Bay on its east side and Clear Lake to its south. Clear Lake and Clear Creek separate Harris County from Galveston County. Residents of Seabook pay property tax to both Harris County and the Clear Creek Independent School District located in Galveston County.

As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,443.

Seabrook is well-known among Houston metropolitan residents for it fish markets on Waterfront Dr. where resident shrimpers and fishermen bring in their catch daily. Besides bordering the bay, the city encompasses marshes though which runoff from inland fields drain to the bay. There are eight miles of continuous trails from Hammer St. to Galveston Bay at Pine Gully Park.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 55.7 km² (21.5 mi²). 14.8 km² (5.7 mi²) of it is land and 40.9 km² (15.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 73.36% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 9,443 people, 4,094 households, and 2,386 families residing in the city. The population density is 636.3/km² (1,647.5/mi²). There are 4,536 housing units at an average density of 305.6/km² (791.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 88.92% White, 2.11% African American, 0.51% Native American, 3.31% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.76% from other races, and 2.36% from two or more races. 10.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,094 households out of which 29.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% are married couples living together, 8.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.7% are non-families. 34.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 38.4% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 5.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 106.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $54,175, and the median income for a family is $66,815. Males have a median income of $50,322 versus $32,161 for females. The per capita income for the city is $29,534. 5.5% of the population and 2.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.1% of those under the age of 18 and 5.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Education

Pupils in Seabrook attend schools in Clear Creek Independent School District.
