The town Terneuzen

The city of Terneuzen is located on the southern shore of the Westerschelde estuary. It can be reached from the rest of the Netherlands via the Westerschelde Tunnel, which opened in March of 2003.

First mentioned in 1325, Terneuzen was a strategically located port on the waterways to Ghent, in present-day Belgium. Nowadays the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal is still an important shipping route. [1] (http://www.binnenvaart.be/pictures/kaarten/waterwegen/21merwede.gif) The port of Terneuzen is the third largest in the Netherlands, after those of Rotterdam and Amsterdam. The largest plant of Dow Chemical outside of the United States is located at Terneuzen, on the west side of the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal.

Terneuzen was once home of the legendary Flying Dutchman, Van der Decken, a captain who cursed God and was condemned to sail the seas forever, as described in the Frederick Marryat novel The Phantom Ship and the Richard Wagner opera.

It received city rights in 1584.

Axel

Axel is a town about 5km southeast of Terneuzen. It received city rights in 1213.

Biervliet

Biervliet is a small town about 5km west of Terneuzen, which received city rights in 1183.

Biervliet is originally a fishing village. The Dutch Reformed Church in Biervliet has a number of intact stained windows dating from 1660-1661.

Philippine

Philippine is a town close to the border with Belgium, 5km southwest of Terneuzen. It received city rights in 1506.

Philippine has gained some renown for its mussel restaurants. On the village square there is a fountain in the shape of a mussel.

Sas van Gent

Sas van Gent is a town on the border with Belgium. The Ghent-Terneuzen Canal passes through Sas van Gent, and at that point there is a lock in the canal. The name of the village, Sas van Gent, means sluice of Ghent.
