According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 km² (3.2 mi²). 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.32% is water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,534 people, 1,645 households, and 1,220 families residing in the city. The population density is 557.5/km² (1,441.9/mi²). There are 1,750 housing units at an average density of 215.2/km² (556.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 89.08% White, 3.04% African American, 1.10% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 4.19% from other races, and 2.45% from two or more races. 11.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,645 households out of which 43.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% are married couples living together, 12.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.8% are non-families. 21.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.17.
In the city the population is spread out with 30.6% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $40,380, and the median income for a family is $43,828. Males have a median income of $32,220 versus $22,662 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,840. 6.3% of the population and 5.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Education
Sanger is home to the Sanger Indians, as well as the Spirit of Sanger Band. As of 2004 Sanger Independent School District has six schools: Sanger High School, grades 9-12, Sanger Middle School, grades 7-8, Sanger Intermediate School, grades 4-6, Chisholm Trail Elementary, grades 1-3, and Tenderfoot Primary School, grades pre-kindergarten and kindergarten.
