Samuel Fessenden

Samuel Fessenden was an American abolitionist, state legislator and father of U.S. Treasury Secretary William Pitt Fessenden. He studied law with Daniel Webster, and served in both houses of the Massachusetts State Legislature. He acted as Major General of the Massachusetts (later Maine) militia, a United States Liberty Party candidate for congressman and governor, and an early supporter of the United States Republican Party.
