Salamanca is the site for the Saturday Salamanca Market, and also the Hobart Summer Festival (including the Taste of Tasmania) in January. In the mid-1990s, Salamanca Square, a sheltered, pedestrian area was opened, adjacent to the now defunct Antarctic Adventure. In 2001, four former grain silos on the esplanade were converted to luxury apartments, now known as The Silos Apartments.
Salamanca Place was named after the victory in 1812 of the Duke of Wellington in the Battle of Salamanca in the Spanish province of Salamanca. It was originally called "The Cottage Green".
