Sahrawi
|
Sahrawi and Saharawi are terms most commonly used for the natives of the Morocco-administered Western Sahara. In Hassaniya Arabic, it means "resident of the Sahara", which in turn stands for desert. Thus, the literal meaning can also be "desert inhabitant." They are presumed to have descended from the Beni Hassan.
Approximately 155,000 Sahrawi live in refugee camps near Tindouf.
The membership of the Polisario Front is primarily Sahrawi.
Contrast this term with Saharan.
