Sackets Harbor, New York

Sackets Harbor is a village located in Jefferson County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 1,386. The village is named after land owner Augustus Sacket.

History

Sackets Harbor was founded in 1801 by Augustus Sacket and was the most significant community in the area until the founding of the City of Watertown.

The village was the location of two battles during the War of 1812. In the first battle in 1812, the brig "Oneida" and shore batteries repulsed an attacking force of five British ships. In the second Battle of Sackett's Harbor in 1813 enemy forces landed and attacked the village, but were again driven off.

American military officer and explorer Zebulon Pike was killed while taking part in the military operations and is buried in the village.

Geography

The village is at the mouth of the Black River by Lake Ontario.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,386 people, 653 households, and 370 families residing in the village. The population density is 234.7/km² (609.1/mi²). There are 791 housing units at an average density of 134.0/km² (347.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.26% White, 0.43% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. 1.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 653 households out of which 23.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.3% are non-families. 35.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.11 and the average family size is 2.72.

In the village the population is spread out with 18.8% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 37.7% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 113.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 113.3 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $42,629, and the median income for a family is $51,397. Males have a median income of $33,696 versus $26,917 for females. The per capita income for the village is $23,269. 7.8% of the population and 5.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.9% of those under the age of 18 and 7.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
