Ruri Hoshino (星野ルリ) is a fictional character in the anime series Martian Successor Nadesico. She is responsible for running the Nadesico's computer systems.
12 year old Ruri was produced as part of an attempt to create a "perfect human" and is thought to be the only survivor from those experiments (though it is later revealed that there is another, under the guidance of Akito Tenkawa). Aside from her trademark "Baka baka!" (idiots!) remarks about the crew, she also does the pre-episode narration, and is the main character in the 'Get to Know Nadesico' television series produced by Inez Fressange.
Ruri is also the princess of a country called Peaceland, which started out as a theme park but is now a country like Switzerland in that it is neutral in all planet politics. When she went to Peaceland to find out about her past, she took Akito with her as her 'knight' (Much to Yurika's chagrin). However, after learning of her past, who her parents and 'real parents' were, she has no intention of returning there and chose instead to return to the Nadesico and her 'compliment of fools'.
She is a talented singer as well, and it is possible she has feelings for Akito Tenkawa, since he doesn't patronize her like the other members of the crew. Her best friend is Omoikane, the ship computer, and she usually goes to 'it' if she has any questions about life in general. (Akito also helped save Omoikane from being erased by the military, so it's little wonder she likes him)
She has silver hair, gold eyes, very pale skin, and appears to be a healthy young girl for her age.
She is an orphan who was 'bought' by the Nergal corporation for the purposes of being the chief science officer for The Nadesico, which was actually to be completed six years after she had been adopted.
In Prince of Darkness, Ruri becomes the captain of the Nadesico.
Although not a star character in the television series, she is very popular in fandom for a number of reasons including her self-amused deadpan delivery. She is thought to be a major inspiration for later cutesy-looking little girl characters (not overly stoic ones such as Rei Ayanami) who are sarcastic and jaded rather than cutesy-acting.
