Roxbury, New York

Roxbury is a town located in Delaware County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,509.

The Town of Roxbury is at the eastern end of the county.

History

The town was formed from part of the Town of Stamford in 1799.

The town was the birthplace and the home of naturalist John Burroughs. A memorial site is by his birthplace. Jay Gould, the Railroad financier, was also born in the town.

Geography

The eastern town lines border Greene County and Schoharie County.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 226.9 km² (87.6 mi²). 225.7 km² (87.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.52% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,509 people, 1,078 households, and 719 families residing in the town. The population density is 11.1/km² (28.8/mi²). There are 2,026 housing units at an average density of 9.0/km² (23.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.33% White, 0.44% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 1.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,078 households out of which 26.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.9% are married couples living together, 6.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% are non-families. 28.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.82.

In the town the population is spread out with 21.5% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 23.2% from 25 to 44, 30.0% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $32,214, and the median income for a family is $40,721. Males have a median income of $32,500 versus $28,958 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,177. 13.4% of the population and 11.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.0% of those under the age of 18 and 6.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Hardscrabble -- A hamlet north of Roxbury village.
  • Hubbell Corners -- A hamlet northeast of Roxbury village on Route 30.
  • More Settlement -- A hamlet north of Roxbury village on Route 30.
  • Roxbury -- The hamlet of Roxbury is on Route 30. Roxbury was at one time a village, but dissolved its incorporation.
  • West Settlement -- A hamlet west of Roxbury village.
