|
Roşiori de Vede is one of the oldest cities in Romania. It was first mentioned in a document which dates back to 1385, when the city was visited by two German pilgrims who were returning from Jerusalem and stopped for a few days in Russenart, as they named the city at that time.
Rosiori de Vede (named also Russenart or Ruşii de Vede), was one of the most important military and cultural cities in the Wallachia region. There or around the city were born many Romanian personalities, like: Radu Grămăticu, Alexandru Depărăţeanu, Gala Galaction, Petru Bellu, Zaharia Stancu, Marin Preda, a.s.o. During the reign of Matei Basarab, the city was between the most known and important in Romania. In fact, it is the true cultural and historic capital of Teleorman county. The current administrative capital of the county is Alexandria.
