Rocky Mount is a town located in Franklin County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,066. It is the county seat of Franklin CountyTemplate:GR.
Geography
Rocky Mount is located at 36°59'59" North, 79°53'23" West (36.999855, -79.889673)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.9 km² (4.6 mi²). 11.9 km² (4.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,066 people, 1,698 households, and 1,018 families residing in the town. The population density is 342.0/km² (886.5/mi²). There are 1,796 housing units at an average density of 151.1/km² (391.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 74.50% White, 22.26% African American, 0.27% Native American, 1.11% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. 1.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,698 households out of which 26.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.2% are married couples living together, 15.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.0% are non-families. 36.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.87.
