Riga is a town located in Monroe County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,437.
The Town of Riga is southwest of the City of Rochester on the western border of the county.

History
The Town of Riga was derived from a previous Town of Northampton as East and West Pultney and later became the Town of West Riga even before the formation of Monroe County.
Geography
The west town line is the border of Genesee County, New York. Interstate highway 490 crosses the town.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 91.4 km² (35.3 mi²). 91.1 km² (35.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.37% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,437 people, 1,969 households, and 1,518 families residing in the town. The population density is 59.7/km² (154.6/mi²). There are 2,018 housing units at an average density of 22.2/km² (57.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.26% White, 0.72% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 0.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,969 households out of which 39.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.9% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.9% are non-families. 18.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.15.
In the town the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 99.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.5 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $58,842, and the median income for a family is $65,106. Males have a median income of $47,083 versus $31,202 for females. The per capita income for the town is $23,590. 3.8% of the population and 3.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.3% of those under the age of 18 and 10.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
