Readfield is a town located in Kennebec County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,360.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 80.6 km² (31.1 mi²). 75.7 km² (29.2 mi²) of it is land and 4.9 km² (1.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.08% water. It is located on Maranacook Lake.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,360 people, 867 households, and 673 families residing in the town. The population density is 31.2/km² (80.8/mi²). There are 1,148 housing units at an average density of 15.2/km² (39.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.71% White, 0.08% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.08% from other races, and 1.36% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 867 households out of which 39.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.4% are married couples living together, 8.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.3% are non-families. 18.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.72 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 102.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $48,893, and the median income for a family is $51,890. Males have a median income of $37,981 versus $27,971 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,707. 5.2% of the population and 4.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.5% of those under the age of 18 and 6.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Landmarks

Readfield is home to Maranacook Community School, a regional middle and high school which serves the communities of Readfield, Mount Vernon, Manchester, and some students from Fayette and Kents Hill. It is known for being a fairly progressive school, having been pioneers in the state of Maine in school-based health care programs, the advisee system (since the school opened in 1976), Project Graduation, and the now state-wide middle school laptops program. In 2001, the brand-new multi-million-dollar Maranacook Community Middle School opened its doors, and Maranacook Community School received much-needed expansions.
