Rajkot is also a district in the state of Gujarat. Rajkot City is the administrative headquarters of this district.
Location
This district is surrounded by Kutch (North), Surendranagar, Bhavnagar (East), Amreli, Junagadh (South) and Jamnagar (West) districts.

History
Founded in 1612 by Vibhaji Jadeja and Raju Sandhi. During British Rule, it was a regional headquarter for the British rule.
After Independence, it became the capital of Saurashtra State. The State Assembly used to be in Rajkot. Dhebarbhai Patel was the first Chief Minister of Saurashtra State.
When states were created based on Languages spoken by the people, city along with Saurashtra State was merged into Gujarat State.
Mahatma Gandhi spent his early years in Rajkot while his father was a Diwan to the Saurashtran Nawab, and the house where Gandhi lived is now a museum named Kaba Gandhi No Delo. He went to school in here (Alfred High School, now called as Mahatma Gandhi High School).
